On 29 Teves circa 1898, in a small Lithuanian village called Vaboilnick,
Elazar Menachem Man was born to Rav Azriel and Bas Sheva Shach. In time,
Elazar Menachem Man would grow up to become the Rosh Yeshiva (Dean) of
the famed Ponevezh yeshiva (located in Bnei Brak).
Rav Shach's love for Torah was almost beyond comprehension. His love led
him to constantly toil in Torah learning. So immersed was he in his
learning that he many times became oblivious to the going ons of this
world. On one such occasion the Rosh Yeshiva was seen entering the Beit
Midrash (House of Study) holding the hand of a young child. When asked
by the students if the child was a grandchild of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav
Shach suddenly gasped and looked down only to see the child who had
asked some time earlier for help crossing the street.
